What is 3x3 basketball?

It is a version of 3on3 basketball designed by FIBA, the sport’s world governing body
What is 3on3 basketball?

It is a format of basketball where teams of 3 play each other, as opposed to teams of 5, in traditional 5v5 basketball.
Why is it called 3x3?

FIBA wanted to signify that it had built a set of rules for its version of 3on3 basketball. So, to make it stand-out as something new they decided to give it a name.
What is different about 3x3?

  • 1 point is scored from a basket shot within the arc. 2 points are scored for a basket outside the arc
  • Both male & female play with the same size basketball. In fact, 3x3 has its own special ball
  • Coaching is not allowed in 3x3
  • You can’t foul out in 3x3. Although there are penalties for accumulated team fouls
  • The ball does not need be ‘checked’ after a team scores. Play is continuous
  • Teams are allowed only 1 timeout
  • There is no half-time. Regulation games are a maximum of 10 minutes. However, they can end earlier if a team scores 21 points
  • If the scores are tied after 10 minutes, then it the game goes to sudden death overtime – first team to 2 points wins

What major 3x3 tournaments have taken place in the UK?

The biggest 3x3 event so far in the UK took place at the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games. England men won the gold medal and the women won the silver.
Is 3x3 at the Olympics?

Yes. The first ever Olympic 3x3 tournament took place at Tokyo 2020
Can you get paid to play 3x3?

Yes. There is a FIBA World Tour for men. And a FIBA Women’s Series. They pay out prize money.
